Carrot seed germination is the process by which a carrot seed (Daucus carota) transforms into a young seedling. Carrot seeds are slow to germinate and typically take 7 to 21 days, depending on environmental conditions.

1. Imbibition (Water Uptake)
Timeline: Day 0–2

The tiny, dry seed absorbs water and swells.

This reactivates cellular metabolism inside the dormant embryo.

2. Enzyme Activation and Growth Initiation
Timeline: Day 2–7

Enzymes break down stored food into usable energy.

Growth processes start, but are slow due to the seed's natural dormancy and protective coating.

3. Radicle Emergence
Timeline: Day 7–14 (sometimes up to 21 days)

The radicle (embryonic root) is the first visible structure.

It grows downward to anchor the seed and begin absorbing water and nutrients.

4. Shoot Emergence

The hypocotyl (lower stem) elongates and pulls the cotyledons (seed leaves) above the soil.
